Every Weekend beginning in May through the Autumn months - Nature Programs & Guided Hikes at DeSoto State Park - Frogs, creepy crawlers, mountain life, Trail of Tears, flower and bird watching, are just a sampling of what you will learn by state park naturalists and Jacksonville State University Field School staff. Printed brochures of all programs are available by calling 256-782-5697.  Programs are held every Friday and Saturday night at the DeSoto State Park Pavilion and begin at 8 p.m. In the event of rain, programs are moved to the Nature Center. 256-845-0051

Every Saturday and Sunday! I-59 Flea Market Featured on Turner South's JUNKIN', this indoor/outdoor event takes place each Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual booths sell anything from antiques, collectibles, tools, garden decor, fresh fruits and vegetables, and various name brand products. May 3 Bilingual Spanish-English Hike (Ąpara los personas hablas Espanol! Join Dr. Kelly Gregg on a walking tour of DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon. Interpreted in Spanish by Mr. Matthew Grizzard and JSU International Students, this moderately strenuous hike will give an introduction to local geology, archaeology, history, and native plants. The program is designed for individuals who are fluent and learning Spanish. Wear appropriate shoes and bring a camera, snacks and water. A visit to the Mexican bakery and tortilla factory in Fort Payne is a delightful end to this program. Pre-registration is required.

May 3 Wildflower Saturday at DeSoto State Park This nature-packed day begins with a hearty breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Mountain Inn Restaurant in DeSoto State Park. A guided wildflower hike begins at 8:30. Return to the restaurant for lunch at 11:30 followed by another hike at 12:30. A dinner buffet and wildflower presentation at the restaurant wind down the day. The hikes are free to the public. Menu prices will be charged for all meals. May 7 Cave Treasure Hunt Do you enjoy trying to solve riddles and clues?  Ever wanted to find 
buried treasure?  Up for new & exciting challenges?  Then our Cave Treasure Hunt is for you.  This 4-hour adventure will take you deep into the heart of Manitou Cave.  You will have to solve and follow each clue in order to find the next one, and ultimately the Treasure!  Are you up for the challenge?  Meet at True Adventure Sports.

May 10 International Migratory Bird Day The Little River Canyon National Preserve staff will hand out materials and talk to visitors about this areas importance to migratory birds. May 10 Paperweight Class This class is designed for those who really just want see what molten glass is all about.  Feel the heat, gather from the furnace, sculpt the glass into you own design.  It is ultimately about the experience, some experimentation and a couple nice paperweights to take home or to the office to show your friends.  Class size at the largest will be five students so everyone has adequate time at the bench working.  There will be material provided before the class for you to review and become familiar with concerning safety and basic glassblowing vocabulary.  Please join us for some in-depth discovery. $120  per person. 9 p.m. to 1 p.m.  256-523-3188

May 14 Rappelling Basics Class This class covers rappelling basics indoor and basics outdoor.  The basics indoor class teaches you about rappelling safety/rappelling gear and its application, rappelling knots and application, and rigging points needed for rappelling.  The basics outdoor class reviews safety procedures, knots, gear, and rigging points; then you learn how to safely rappel and do several rappels before returning to the store for the rappelling test and knot exam.  Total indoor and outdoor cost $145 per person. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  256-997-9577 Note: You will receive a Class 1 rappelling card upon successful completion of this class and exams.

May 15 GPS Navigation Class For Your Vehicle  Learn how navigate safely and efficiently from your car and how to pinpoint a location for quick return. Also learn how to search by waypoints or coordinates. This class will make you feel comfortable when operating your Automotive GPS unit.  Note: Automotive GPS is required. May 17 History Hike At Little River During this half mile hike, Larry Beane will explore stories of the Edna Hill Community. This thriving community of the early 1900`s laid the foundation of human activity around the Little River Falls area. The people from the Edna Hill Community grew up around the falls. Larry Beane will talk of the homes, store, mills, and the old bridge that are long gone, but not forgotten.  The hike will cover the loop from the paved parking lot at Little River Falls to the earlier bridge abutments above the current bridge. May 23 & 24 Introduction to Musical Instruments in Story & Song  Join Musician Tony Thomas for this interesting program introducing acoustic instruments such as the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and banjo by using stories & songs to give you a appreciation for each instrument. May 24 Herb Lore of Appalachia-Mountain Medicine Join herbalist Darryl Patton and DSP staff for a hike on the trails of Desoto State Park to see many different species of plants that were used for medicine making in the past and many that are used in modern medicine today. May 30 - 31 Glass Fusing for Jewelry Class This is a 2-day introductory class of learning how to cut, assemble, and fuse Bullseye glass into your own personal jewelry designs. June 7 Fossils of Little River Area Geology The uplifting of Lookout Mountain and the cutting down of Little River Canyon has resulted in the spectacular canyon and its fossils. The spectacular view of the canyon cliffs have more to offer than just a scenic view. We will take a look at some of the fossils from the local area that show the story of Lookout Mountain`s rise from a prehistoric sea.  Larry Beane will show some of the fossils from Little River Canyon and discuss the geological story that they tell. The fossils show the story of the ecological changes during uplift of the mountains from the seafloor. August 16 History Hike At Little River During this half mile hike, Larry Beane will explore stories of the Edna Hill Community. This thriving community of the early 1900`s laid the foundation of human activity around the Little River Falls area. The people from the Edna Hill Community grew up around the falls. Larry Beane will talk of the homes, store, mills, and the old bridge that are long gone, but not forgotten.  The hike will cover the loop from the paved parking lot at Little River Falls to the earlier bridge abutments above the current bridge.
